What is Milonga

A Dance That Lasts Until the First Light of Morning

Milonga is the name of a music genre and the dance performed to that music. This dance is extremely similar to tango. The origins of these two dances are the same. Milongas have very enjoyable rhythms. Tango clubs, where everyone goes in suitable attire, are also called Milonga. In these kinds of clubs, the entertainment and dancing continue until the first light of morning. During Milonga nights, dance songs are played in groups. Care is taken to ensure that songs played by the same orchestra or songs with the same style are played within a group. While tango songs are played in the first group, Milonga might be played in the second group, and Latin music in the subsequent group. In a song group, dancing continues with the same partner. Songs that are not to be danced to, called "curtains," are played between groups.

Couples Must Dance at Least Two Songs Together

During these curtains, dancers spend time at their tables. When the dance restarts, partners change and continue dancing. Dancers who do not wish to continue dancing with the same partner in a song group should politely dance with their partners for at least two songs. Dancing should begin as soon as everyone starts dancing. Conversation should be avoided while dancing. Dancing should end on or before the last note of the song. The couple thanking each other at the end of the dance indicates that they do not wish to continue dancing with the same partner. If they wish to continue dancing with the same partner, they should not exchange thanks.
